The more deeply we understand the land and the people who inhabit it before designing, the more likely we are to create architecture that belongs rather than disrupts. This early investment in understanding reduces costly surprises later in the project, uncovers opportunities that might otherwise be missed, and ensures that every major design decision is informed rather than assumed.
Our studies explore both the ecological and human systems that shape a place—from climate, soils, hydrology and natural patterns, to local culture, patterns of movement, everyday rituals and the ways people occupy and experience space. Together, these observations reveal the underlying patterns that should inform every design decision.
At Laya, we combine environmental analysis with on-site observation, recognising that understanding a place requires both measurable data and careful observation. We recommend beginning this work several months before design starts, allowing seasonal conditions, patterns of use and ecological relationships to be observed over time.
